It is amazing how something that is recognized as an important center of European Medieval art is looked upon by most of the world as a place where you can snap a cool picture of yourself ‘leaning’ on the Tower of Pisa. A place detailed, yet decayed†¦ a place with four monuments, yet recognized as one center†¦ a place representing life, yet death. The aura surrounding this square makes me just want to sit on the grass and read or write or think. I just want the stony intricate building to envelop my train of thought and allow me to live in a world hundreds of years before. The stories that fall under the genre of horror include a few essential elements: a villain or one seen as evil to create an initial story line. The foil is the next element; a foil is a person who tries to stop the villain from going through with the evil plan or plot. These two elements naturally lead to conflict between the two persons or groups and then from this conflict ? suspense, the last element is added. Suspense is important to keep the reader interested and to keep the story line going. When psychology is added to a story, the definition of horror is changed completely. There are still those few essential elements above but there is also a few more added. The story now has something to do with the mind and how it works, and there is really no definition for that. The mind and its workings are a mystery to us and that mystery of the mind adds to the suspense and therefore the idea of psychology and horror are able to go together and become one. This essay will prove that The Silence of the Lambs is indeed a psychological horror according to the five criteria above along with other sources. The first element to a psychological horror is a villain, and the villain is The Silence of the Lambs is Mr. Jame Gumb. He is a white male in his mid thirties, ?most serial killers are white male, unemployed, intelligent and experience financial difficulty.?(Bonata, 3) Gumb is all of these things, he is unemployed but a very skilled seamstress, and using these skills is making himself a second skin out of women who he is able to take control of and render them powerless. He experienced financial difficulties until he was the recipient of a large sum of money from an inheritance. ?The unconscious fear of women goads some men with a compulsive urge to conquer, humiliate, hurt, or render powerless some available sample of womanhood.? (Menninger, 183) Gumb was deeply disturbed and unable to overcome the death of his mother and he wanted to be like her and resented any woman because he feels that he should have been born a woman instead of the man that he is. He is sewing a skin of women to try to become more like his mother and less of the man that he is. This is how he received his nickname ?Buffalo Bill? because the way he murders and then skins his victims. Jame Gumb is a very disturbed individual and his ?violence and crimes are often attempts to escape from insanity.? (Menninger, 181) Jame Gumb is in a word where he believes that he can become a woman and live somehow be with his mother again or even attempt to become her. ?Men who are violently afraid of their repressed but nearly emergent homosexual desired often try to overcome these fears with violent demonstrations. ? (Menninger, 183) Jame Gumb did not know what he was in terms of sexuality and decided that he would rather be a woman than a man. This desire drove him to commit such horrible crimes and try to become a woman using their skins. The foils to Jame Gumb are a much stronger force that he is or could ever be, they are the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the FBI. The first obstacle is that the whereabouts of Gumb are unknown and his identity has alluded the FBI since the murders first begun. The only link that they have to the murder is Jame Gumbs X- psychiatrist named Dr Hannibal Lecter. Lecter gives Clarice Starling a few hints with every visit she makes she makes to him about the murder. While revealing hints about the murders is, at the same time revealing something about Clarices childhood. This causes Starling to search inside of herself for the answers to the questions she has been looking for about her life and childhood while at the same time trying to solve the case of Buffalo Bill. Lecter proves to be a trustworthy aid and does help the case and Jame Gumb is eventually found. The next element in not just a psychological horror but in any novel is the idea of conflict. There is a great deal of conflict between not only the FBI and Jame Gumb but also between a few other parties. The reasons for the conflict between the FBI and Jame Gumb are evident- the FBI would like him to be captured and Gumb will do anything to stop them. He keeps quiet and avoids contact with other people, he hides the bodies of the murdered women and drops them away from his home to avoid being caught. He wants to achieve his dream of being a woman and he will let nothing stop him. The next conflict in the novel is between the FBI and Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The FBI sees Lecter as a threat to the case and does not advocate his involvement with the case of Buffalo Bill. The FBI knows how brilliant Dr. Lecter is and they are not sure if he can be trusted to tell the truth about what he knows about Buffalo Bill. The last conflict involves Clarice Starling and the struggle that she is facing within herself. She is searching inside herself for answers to the questions that she forgot she knew about, things about her past, childhood and about her entire life. Dr. Lecter brings up things in Starlings life that she needed in order for her life to be complete. She is able to straighten things out in her life that have stopped her from achieving her full potential in the past. With doing this the case of Buffalo Bill is solved. The closing of the case did not come without suspense however. Through the entire book there was some sort of suspense weather it concerned Buffalo Bill, the actions of Hannibal Lecter, or the situation that Clarice Starling was in. The last seven chapters are the most suspenseful chapters of the story. They deal with the capture and killing of Jame Gumb, the rescuing of the prisoner that he held hostage and finally the freeing of Clarice Starling from the ?screaming of the lambs?. Clarice starling murders Jame Gumb and his prisoner is set free with a few minor injuries. Clarice Starling finally finds peace within her and is able to enjoy life to the fullest and she owes it all the Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The location of Lecter is left unknown which leave the reader without a final closing further adding to the suspense of the novel. Novels in the genre of psychological horror are said to have the elements listed above. The style of Gabriel Garcia Marquez Paper As the novel reaches its concluding stages, critics say the mood is paradoxically apocalyptic (Telgen 236). It reveals the conflict ahead. As Fermina and Florentiono are taking their boat trip together, he tells the captain to fly the yellow flag symbolizing cholera so that no passengers will get on or off. The captain does so however admonishes Florentino by saying that the surrounding towns are almost stripped bare of wood. As if predestined, they get stuck in the water and are questioned by the police as to the cholera on board. Here, they finally realize that barriers still exist in their love and they cannot simply sail off with the privacy that they wished for. It is paradoxical because this is the moment Florentino has been waiting for all his life and the current situation inhibits him from living in that dream. The theme that love knows no boundaries is still seen here as Florentino takes drastic measures to retain privacy for himself and Fermina. It is told from a limited omniscient point of view, hence, the existence of one narrator through multiple flashbacks, and Marquez may sometimes withhold omniscient insight from his characters (Telgen 228). This is especially true in the latter part of the book when Fermina goes away and Florentino is alone to contemplate why she has suddenly left. The reader knows but it is impossible for the characters to have that same knowledge. The structure of the novel, divided into three main books, is characterized by a parallel series of boat rides (229). Each character seems to leave individually at some point and make vows to himself or herself that will change the outcome of the novel, and, therefore, the theme. The first boat ride, taken by Florentino, is an attempt to forget about Fermina. However, it proves fruitless as he resolves to love Fermina for the rest of his life (225). The second boat ride, taken by Fermina, is the beginning of a new life as she is now married to Dr. Urbino; she resolves to love her husband with mind and heart. The third boat ride occurs as a consummation of their own love and symbolizes the union of two elderly people who come together despite societal stereotypes. It accurately displays an elderly persons wishes as he/she can continue to receive emotional fulfillment to the end. Themes of continuous love and how true love can triumph are apparent while tracing the development of love through the maturation of the characters; this theme is again reflected in the idea of parallel boat rides. The Garcimarquesian voice (Ryan 217) comes about because of Marqeuzs incredible mastery of language and his special style known as magical realism. Although not as apparent in Love in the Time of Cholera as in his other works, such as 100 Years of Solitude, magic realism is defined by the critics as something that moves when nothing else does. It is what a stage director looks for when instructs a performer to keep the hands or feet still; to bind them, so that the features of the shoulders can make a more expressive performance. Garcia Marquezs art is a mighty transfiguration of these bound movements (Telgen 237). It has a simplicity that is so complex and expressive. The reader can sense each movement and make distinctions among all the actions. Another more concrete definition is that magical realism is a genre of fiction which blends mysterious, supernatural, and even surreal events with the hard political and social realities of life (Telgen 223). It juxtaposes two opposites, reality and utopia, so well that the characters seem engulfed in their own world and the reader is taken in by that. Love in the Time of Cholera is based more on social realism which focuses on social problems and the hardships of everyday life (Coover 253). More social detail is present with less mysticism as Marquez sets this novel in a city plagued by cholera. The sharp class divisions are shown by the detail with which certain events are described. On Dr. Urbinos visit to the slave quarters upon the request of a late friend, Dr. Urbinos horse drawn carriage was distinguishable from the few still left in the city because the patent leather roof was always kept polished, and it had fittings of bronze that would not be corroded by salt, and wheels and poles painted red with gilt trimming like gala nights at the Opera (Marquez 12). Also, the novel is primarily focused on urban society, as can be inferred from the presence of a busy ship port, and active elite society (Telgen 229). This setting contributes to the theme in making the connection that the symptoms of love and cholera are the same (224). Love, like cholera during epidemic times, leaves its mark, especially in the case of Florentino, who waited fifty one years. The continuous love and faithfulness expressed by him is admirable. Love in the Time of Cholera successfully intertwines several stylistic devices to create a novel with deep meaning. The age old theme of love knowing no boundaries is clearly demonstrated by Marquezs blend of legend and history in ways that make the legends seems truer than truth (Ryan 218). His writings are mystical and magical and accurately portray the transient nature of life, particularly recognizable as the main characters continue to age and mature (218). The novel stresses that nothing is everlasting and love never remains because people change, but rather remains because it has changed with the time that has changed the people. Love, sometimes portrayed as ephemeral, has managed to become permanent in the life of Florentino Ariza as he waited fifty one years, nine months, and four days to be with the one he loves. Taking away this right would be invading a womans constitutional liberty. Abortion relieves the undesired child of future distress. In most cases, the unwanted child is malnourished, has no medical care, and gets little attention or love. This is caused from the mother being very young, inexperienced, or too poor to take care of the child. In addition, the foster care system is inadequate in providing attention, education, and discipline. The child would grow up with improper tools to live in society. Abortion establishes a peaceful society. Due to the child being raised with improper tools, the child would grow to become an unproductive menace to society. These individuals become violent, and lack morality due to the small amount of care they themselves received. Many get involved in drugs and crime. In the end, not only does the child suffer, but also society has to tolerate his violent behavior and crimes. Abortion should remain legalized. If abortion were prohibited, many women would perform illegal abortions. This may do serious harm to the mother and her body. In addition, pregnancy and childbirth can prevent women from getting an education. This fits into lifestyle; the person might not live near a gym and live near lots of unhealthy places, they could live near a deprived area and may not want to go for a run to get excersice; they may also go out a lot with friends (social eating and drinking) these all have an impact on a persons health. A persons occupation is a factor- if someone has a job that requires sitting at a desk, they arent getting much excersise and will gain weight, however- if their job is being a fitness trainer or a football coach, then they will get consistant excersice. The economical climate is a big factor as wages have stayed the same and the price of food and drinks has gone up, and also access to shops- the person may not have a car or the funds spare to get a bus, and if their corner shop raises its prices of food then the person will have to pay for them as they cant afford to get a bus or a taxi. They may not be able to afford healthy food and processed foods are often cheaper (like pizza and microwave meals) so it is easier. If a person has cultural beliefs- if they are a vegetarian or a vegan, this can affect their dietry choices as they will only want to eat non-meat products/non-animal produce, and often these products are more expensive. Education has a big impact on heath factors, as many people havent been educated on what nutrition labels mean so they dont understand what is on the label. If a person is lactose intolerent, then they wont be able to eat or drink products that have dairy products and the natural sugar (that is found in milk- it is added to foods), they wont be able to eat cream, cheese, yoghurt, biscuits and chocolate, and many breakfast cereals. This can affect their intake because lactose is often used for energy as well as it helps to absorb a number of minerals such as calcium and magnestium so deficiencies can start. This means that they wont be getting enough calcium (high in dairy products etc) or magnesium in their diet- this can lead to brittle bones, weak bones and teeth, calcium also aids the stopping of blood clots. If a person choses a lifestyle of living on their own; this can have a major impact on their nutritional health because if they live on their own; it is easier to have a takeaway or a microwave meal than to cook a portion of food for themselves, which requires washing up. It is faster to cook a meal in the microwave or order some food from the takeaway. It is also more expensive to put food in the fridge, which if the person isnt in a lot due to working then this could mean wasting money on food going off and not getting used when only one person is in. They wont have fruit and vegetables in as these will also go off and is it also a waste of money. This could lead to a high bmi, high cholestrol, and lead to the person being overweight. They will not be getting a balanced diet or following the eat well plate to stay healthy. There are several ways to reduce the negative influences that impact on a persons diet; if a person is lactose intolerant, they can still get calcium and magnesium as they can take lactose subsititute to help in digestion. If a person smokes, and they are smoking instead of eating, then this means that they arent having a balanced diet or getting all the nutrients they need- the person could cut down smoking and eat more meals when hungry instead of replacing meals for cigerettes. A person who lives on their own could also get healthier meals in that can be cooked in the oven for a short period of time- they could look online on what the traffic light labels mean and ensure if they are eating microwave meals then they are high in energy and low in salt and fat. If they work shift patterns, then they should ensure the food that they do eat (if it is late at night), that it is healthy and that they dont just go to the chipshop because it is easier, they should take soup or a pasta salad, not only will it give them lots of energy which is a slow release, it is healthier.

This one explains the proper use of vertical lists, which are organized by setting the items on the list (following an introductory phrase or sentence), apart from each other, distinguished by numbers, letters, or other symbols, on consecutive lines. Vertical lists are best employed in place of in-line lists when the list is long and/or the items consist of longer phrases or even complete sentences (or even more than one sentence). However, vertical lists are often useful in contexts in which guidance or instruction is being offered, though they are most effective when they are concise, and extended list items are not advised. If list items consist of more than one sentence, the information might be better displayed as regular text. The following vertical list (too simple to be formatted as such but used here for illustrative purposes), is offered as a basic example: The colors of the American flag are red, white, and blue. (Note: This and other correct lists in this post are formatted in boldface.) Just as is the case with an in-line list, if one or more items in a vertical list itself requires a comma, each item should be set off from the others by a semicolon. Note that despite the vertical-list formatting, because the introductory phrase and the list constitute a syntactically organized sentence, the introductory phrase is not punctuated, but terminal punctuation follows the final item. (Some publishers, however, simplify this format by omitting especially the conjunction and perhaps the commas as well.) However, compare the previous example with a version in which the introductory phrase constitutes a complete independent clause: The colors of the American flag are as follows: red white blue Here, the introductory phrase and the list do not constitute a sentence, so the list items are not punctuated. Reflection on Experience With Surgical Wound Care Reflective Practice is something more than thoughtful practice. It is that form of practice which seeks to problematise many situations of professional performance so that they can become potential learning situations and so the practitioners can continue to learn, grow develop in and through practice (Jarvis 1992). Moon (2004) defines reflection as part of learning and thinking. We reflect in order to learn something, or we learn as a result of reflecting, and the term reflective learning emphasizes the intention to learn from current or prior experience. Using the Gibbs (1988) reflective model for analysis, I will be relaying my thoughts and feelings through this essay which talks about my experience in achieving my learning outcome on surgical wound care. DESCRIPTION As I started my adaptation program in the surgical ward, I am expected to be dealing so much with surgical wound care. To reinforce my knowledge skills on the management of surgical wounds, I studied on the similarities differences that I have observed from our practices back home and from what is practiced here. I noted the different types of dressings cleansing solutions used and the different practices protocols regarding management of wounds. I observed how my mentors changed the dressings, how they removed stitches and staples and how they cleaned the surgical wound. I also observed how complications are prevented by providing patient education and observing the principles of proper hand washing and infection control. During my whole adaptation stay, I was able to develop my skills in the management of surgical wounds. During my previous training back home, we were not given the chance to perform procedures such as changing dressings, cleansing surgical wounds, and removing stitches since it was the surgical resident doctors responsibility to do that. Although I know how to do it due to the numerous times Ive seen them perform these procedures, it still feels different when you do these procedures yourself because you will be able to enhance the skill and gain more confidence when you do it more often. FEELINGS The whole training program gave me the opportunity to apply what I know when performing procedures of managing surgical wounds. Every time I finish performing any procedure, I feel really relieved knowing that I am enhancing my skills in this aspect more more and knowing that I am more self-assured with the experiences Ive had. I also became more confident with providing patient education and focused on principles on wound care hygiene, bathing, and prevention of complications. Aseptic technique was always observed whenever I touched the patients wound to prevent infection. Every time I come in contact with the patients skin, I always kept these principles in mind. EVALUATION The whole experience gave a lot of positive outcomes for me. I understood more about topics such as tissue viability wound healing and I was more familiar with the different dressings commonly used. Another new experience for me was when I was able to witness how to change vacuum dressings for a patient who had a chronic wound in his foot. As defined by Thomas (2001), Vacuum assisted closure (also called vacuum therapy, vacuum sealing or topical negative pressure therapy) is a sophisticated development of a standard surgical procedure, the use of vacuum assisted drainage to remove blood or serous fluid from a wound or operation site. I was amazed with how vacuum could help in wound healing. ANALYSIS According to NHS report, 1998, Wound care has, in the past, not been well managed because of the limited understanding of the healing process and the inadequate range of dressing materials available. Wound management has now come full circle, back to Hippocrates principle and dressings are being developed to provide the ideal environment for nature to do its work. Most surgical wounds are categorised as acute wounds, healing without complication in an expected time frame (Bale and Jones, 1997). However, like all wounds, healing is affected by intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may result in complications (Baxter 2003). Surgical complications include infection, dehiscence, evisceration or bleeding at the surgical site. During the whole of my training, preventing complications was another priority in taking care of surgical patients. The whole experience made me alert at watching out for any sign of complications by making sure that frequent assessment is done, principles of infection control are observed at all times and patient education is being delivered. Looking at the whole experience made me conscious about the great deal of learning I have achieved. I have witnessed how much I have improved with my skills with the help and guidance of my mentor. CONCLUSION Through this experience, I have utilized reflection to aid me in attaining an optimum level of learning by not only focusing on my knowledge but most especially on the positive changes that Ive achieved with my skills. Due to this learning experience, my clinical skill on surgical wound management was further enhanced. If I were to make any changes during my whole learning experience, what I could have done was to grab any opportunity that would come my way. When we had a patient with a vacuum dressing, I was hesitant to change the dressings because I was afraid to make any errors especially that it was quite a complicated procedure. Now Ive realized how much opportunity Ive lost knowing that we did not have many patients who had that type of dressing. So, the government makes a law that helps the child from being abused. This law can be found on Penal Code Section 11164 – 1174.4.3 (California Child Abuse and Neglect Law, 2007). This law aims to protect children and to give the rights of every child. This law also states that failure to report any abuses will consider a crime.
